The Empty Analysis and the Lesson About Data Boundaries in Vietnamese Football Journalism

A document labelled 'comprehensive analysis' appeared on my desk one morning in Saigon. Nine sections, from tactics to finance, from dressing room to stands, were structured like a scouting report. Yet when I opened it, every essential line read N/A or was left blank. There was no league name, no club name, no player name, no scoreline, no number to hold on to. In football journalism, silence is often a signal. So is an empty analysis. The first thing I learned in more than a decade of covering Vietnamese football is that invention cannot replace evidence. A sports article needs a starting point: a match, a player, a figure. This document had none. Writing a long story from it would mean building a castle on sand. That is exactly what I refuse to do. Over the years, I have seen too many articles produced under deadline pressure without any verified facts. Some became popular, but they all wasted the reader's trust. A football writer is like an archaeologist. No archaeologist digs in a random place just for the sake of digging. He looks for layers, fragments, and burial grounds. Tactics need a formation and a match. Finance needs fees and contracts. Results need a league table. Governance needs rules. A dressing room has to have people. Risk needs a concrete club facing a concrete situation. None of these existed in the document. Therefore, no real Vietnamese football article could be built on it. There is no dignity in inventing a transfer or a tactical revolution from nowhere. The honest answer is simple: we do not have enough data. Saying so is not weakness. It is professional discipline. The lesson applies to all football media in Vietnam. An empty analysis should not become a false story. It should become a pause, a moment of waiting until the real data arrives. Only then can we find the gems hidden beneath the surface.
