Pinnacle Motorsport show improved pace at F3 Asian in Buriram
Pinnacle Motorsport maintains its strong momentum in the F3 Asian Championship Certified by FIA since the 2019 season began a month ago. This time Irish-licensed team further improved its performance and achieved a top five finish during the series’ second event at the Chang International Circuit last May 11/12.
The revised driver lineup saw newcomer Ayrton Simmons head the team’s assault and surprise with his early pace in practice. He would later secure P8 and P6 in Qualifying, while his teammate Thomas Smith from Australia ended both sessions in P12.
Race 1 got off to a thunderous start as the entire 14-car field funnelled into the first turn. Simmons grabbed the opportunity to make up several places and slotted into P6. The young British driver enjoyed a fierce three-way battle for P5, but settled for a strong 6th place finish on his maiden F3 Asian race. Regrettably, Smith wasn’t able to show his full potential when his race ended after a single lap due to a turbo issue.
Simmons resumed his charge on Sunday and immediately gained a place in the opening laps of Race 2. He then successfully defended his place for more than half the race distance before mounting a challenge for P4. Simmons repeatedly attempted a pass and nearly took the position on the run to the finish line where he secured 5th place. Sadly, his teammate didn’t see the chequered flag as issues on his #16 car forced him to retire. The two Pinnacle Motorsport drivers worked in tandem for the final race of the weekend. Smith pushed hard to get himself from the back of the grid to get as high up as P9 and was only a few tenths behind his teammate. Only one car separated him and Simmons as the Australian began to close in for a possible formation finish. Simmons and Smith eventually took the chequered flag in 6th and 10th places, respectively to conclude a strong weekend for the team.
John O’Hara, Team Director: “Ayrton impressed the team with his performance on his F3 Asian debut and and hope to see more from him in the future. Also happy with Thomas’ progress so far. Unfortunately we had some technical issues that limited his time on track, but he has shown big improvements since the season opener in Malaysia. Likewise, our B-Max Racing Team driver Miki Koyama did really well to bring the fight to the boys to score solid results.”
