“It was my best single seater racing weekend ever, the perfect start to the season ahead. Despite the difficult track conditions and close up times of the grid, we managed to achieve so much with our limited budget! It felt amazing and dedicated my last victory to our beloved friend Sharon James, who’s birthday was on Saturday.”

Race 1 – Victory and Fastest Lap

“It’s been a great start to the season, taking double pole and the race win,” said an elated Simmons. “I couldn’t have asked for more, especially on a weekend where the field is so close. The top four were separated by less than tenth in qualifying and under a second in the race. It means you have to get everything spot on and we did that. I’m really proud of the JHR Developments team. Rain or shine we’ve had really strong pace. The team is working incredibly well.”

Race 2 (reverse grid) – Second

“It’s been one of the best days I’ve had in motorsport. To achieve a double pole, a race win and a second place at the very beginning of the season is fantastic. “I knew the guys ahead of me on the grid would be running new tyres to try to capitalise on their starting position and that it would take a little longer for them to get their tyres up to optimum temperature so I really pushed to make up places in the opening laps. I’m also surprised and pleased with the fact that our pace was similar to everyone else in the closing stages despite our tyres being older. I’ve experience a lot of ups and downs over the last couple of years, but it feels like everything is finally coming together now and that’s incredibly exciting for the year ahead.”

Race 3 Victory and Fastest Lap

“It was tricky out there,” said Simmons. “There were plenty of damp patches out on track. I got on the wet kerb on the exit of turn two and that lit the rear tyres up which gave the guys behind the opportunity to attempt to pass. I said yesterday was the best day I had ever had in motorsport and now I would have to say it’s been the best weekend. This is a great springboard for the rest of the season. Hopefully we can keep this momentum going.”

Added a jubilant JHR Developments team principal Steven Hunter:

“It’s been an exceptional start to the season for the team. Ayrton performed faultlessly and he’s certainly showing he’s got the potential to be a future champion. Ayrton has been in a very positive frame of mind throughout the weekend and decisions made by the engineering staff have been spot on. They’ve done a fabulous job with the car. This is the only championship we haven’t won on the TOCA package so hopefully it will go our way this year!”
